Why We Offer Anti-Glare Glass Coatings

Glare can happen anywhere, but is especially likely in extremely bright lighting conditions. When the image in the glass screen of a tablet or panel is hard to see because of the light shining on it – that’s glare. Because so many of our tablets and panel PCs are meant for outdoor use or use under harsh, constantly changing conditions, we offer Anti-Glare tablet glass coatings to help improve usability.

What is an Anti-Glare Glass Coating

For tablets, panel computers, and other devices that are likely to be used in full sunlight or other bright conditions, an anti-glare coating on the glass display is essential. Bright lights shining on a screen can “glare”, washing out the image being projected from behind the glass, making it difficult or impossible to see. An Anti-Glare Coating on tablet or device glass helps diffuse the glaring light, reducing its intensity and making it easier for the observer to see the correct image.

Principles of Anti-Glare Glass

Glare on Tablet Glass Screen Angle of LightAnti-Glare Glass Coatings are often frequently referred to as Non-Reflective or Anti-Reflective glass coatings, though these are actually slightly different technology meant to eliminate another issue. Anti-Glare Glass Coatings may also be referred to as Diffuse Reflection Glass Coatings. Anti-Glare screen coatings work to scatter, or diffuse, light glaring on the top of a glass surface or other substrate so that it is less intense in a viewer’s eye, and light being projected from underneath comes through stronger and more clearly.

A microscopic texture applied to the surface of a screen causes light to break up and reflect in numerous directions rather than just one. This texture is carefully designed to have little or no effect on light being transmitted through the glass, however, keeping images clear.

Anti-Glare Glass Coating Process

Adding Anti-Glare properties to glass may be accomplished via two different methods – Chemical Etching or Spray Coating.

Anti-Glare screen breaks up the angle of the lightThe Chemical Etching process is a process whereby special chemicals are applied to the surface of the screen glass or another surface to create microscopic variations. Much like etching with any other tool, the process creates a network of channels and peaks across the surface, but they are so small that they cannot be seen or felt normally. A combination of ionization equilibrium and chemical reactions, dissolution and recrystallization, and ion-exchange catalyzed by a chemical solvent result in the etching process.

The Anti-Glare Spray Coating process works similarly as to the Anti-Fingerprint Spray Coating process. The glass or substrate will be carefully cleaned before a coating is sprayed onto the surface, and cured and tempered in an oven. For Anti-Glare effects, the coating is a layer of sub-micron silicon or silicate in a suspension. This does not damage the glass, but crates a different pattern and texture for the light glaring off the surface.
